Roll Call of Honor

Darron Lee Burks was born August 8, 1978, in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Dallas Police Department employed him on March 1, 2023. Officer Burks was shot and killed while seated in his patrol vehicle in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive. At approximately 10:10 p.m., officers responded to an officer-in-distress call. Upon arriving at the scene, they approached a man standing near the patrol vehicle. The subject opened fire, shooting one officer three times and another officer in the face. Responding officers then found Officer Burks in his patrol vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound.

Christopher D. Gibson was born February 9, 1967, in Hammond, Louisiana. The Dallas Police Department employed him on January 1, 1997. Officer Gibson died from complications resulting from contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty.

Henry Allen Brown was born March 12, 1962, in Victoria, Texas. The Dallas Police Department employed him on May 14, 1990. Officer Brown stopped to assist a disabled motorist during torrential rain. While assisting the motorist, his patrol vehicle was rear-ended. Officer Brown later died at the hospital. The motorist survived with minor injuries.

Walter Leon Williams was born on June 6, 1941, in Elmer, Oklahoma. The Dallas Police Department employed him on August 18, 1983. Senior Corporal Williams was investigating a call when a 17-year-old girl was shot in the breezeway. As he went to investigate, a 31-year-old suspect involved in the call emerged from the bushes and shot Senior Corporal Williams in the forehead.

James Allen Joe was born February 8, 1953, in Newborn, Alabama. He was employed by the Dallas Police Department on October 12, 1983. Officer Joe was shot and killed while off duty after observing a burglary in progress at an apartment complex.

Thomas Lee Harris was born May 11, 1948, in Long Beach, California. The Dallas Police Department employed him on February 1, 1982. Officer Harris died from injuries sustained nine days earlier in an automobile accident while pursuing a stolen vehicle.

Alvin Moore was born February 7, 1950, in Newrod, Louisiana. He became a member of the Dallas Police Department on December 17, 1973. Officer Moore gained a reputation as a “people-oriented” officer with a deep and abiding interest in the elderly and the young. Officer Moore responded to a disturbance call to assist on the scene. Officer Moore was shot in the chest by a 16-year-old suspect while attempting to disarm the barricaded suspect. Officer Moore died en route to Parkland Memorial Hospital.

Levy McQuietor was born September 22, 1943. He became a member of the Dallas Police Department on June 15, 1968. On July 23, 1972, Officer McQuietor was cleaning a shower stall in the police Community Service Center when the cleaning solvent ignited. Officer McQuietor suffered third-degree burns over sixty percent of his body.

William McDuff was hired by the Dallas Police Department as a “special policeman” to maintain the peace in the Springtown Section of Dallas in 1896. After quelling a disturbance at the Evening Chapel of the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church at the corner of Juliet and Boll, Officer McDuff was brutally murdered by two youths involved in the disturbance on Christmas Eve 1896. Officer McDuff was the first African American peace officer in Dallas and the first African American to die in the line of duty. It took more than 50 years before the next African American would work as a police officer in the City of Dallas.
